‘Tis the Season to be Energy Smart

Nov 08, 2011

Displays of bright, twinkling lights — both inside and outside the home — have become a seasonal tradition. But while decorative lights add to the spirit of the holidays, using just one strand of incandescent holiday lights can add up to $10 to your monthly energy costs. The more lights you use, the more it costs, which can cause even the heartiest of holiday revelers to say “Bah, humbug!” when the energy bill arrives in January.

Save energy and money by switching to LED holiday lights. LEDs use 90% less energy than traditional, incandescent light strands — and last up to ten times longer. In addition, LED holiday lights are durable and safer to use. They’re shatterproof and shock-resistant and, since they produce very little heat, are much less of a fire hazard than traditional holiday lighting.

SDG&E® Holiday Light Exchange Events

SDG&E® will hold a free Holiday Light Exchange on Friday, December 2, and Saturday, December 3, during the Balboa Park December Nights celebration. Participants can exchange up to three incandescent holiday light strands for LED holiday lights from 5:00 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday. Just bring a valid California ID and/or a copy of your current bill to the SDG&E booth in front of the Prado Restaurant to exchange your traditional holiday lights for up to three multi-colored, 15-foot energy-saving LED holiday light strands.

Additional Holiday Lighting Turn-in Events are scheduled throughout San Diego County from Sunday, November 20, to Sunday, December 4.
