About the Contest

A Call to Gadgeteers, Designers, and Dreamers

In the alternate reality of Giskin Anomaly, Pandora and Drake use an Anomaly Detector to discover thoughts from the past that have become embedded in the Balboa Park landscape.

But what does this incredible device look like? How does it work? How is it detecting thoughts and memories from so long ago? And could a new, advanced model pick up even more memories from history?

Help Pandora and Drake uncover more clues about the mystery surrounding the Giskin Anomaly by designing a new Anomaly Detector. The inventors who submit Detectors with the most elegant engineering and advanced technological design will win cash and prizes valuing over $1,000!

  • Grand Prize: $100 cash gift card, steamy swag bag, 2nd-class (three-day) membership to Gaslight Gathering, and a fabulous two-night stay at The Cosmopolitan Hotel and Restaurant in Old Town, San Diego. The oldest surviving building in San Diego, the hotel features ten Victorian-style bedrooms and a full-service restaurant and bar. The prize includes two nights in a luxury hotel suite and dinner at The Cosmopolitan Restaurant.*

The Giskin Anomaly Detector Design Contest, sponsored by Balboa Park Online Collaborative, offers steampunk enthusiasts the opportunity to show their creativity by creating a steampunk version of the Anomaly Detector used by Pandora and Drake in Giskin Anomaly, Balboa Park’s park-wide cell phone adventure. Entries will be judged using the following criteria: Originality (40%), Workmanship (40%), and Connection to the idea of an Anomaly Detector (20%).

Entries must be physical models of the Detector. They must weigh less than 30 pounds and cannot exceed any of the following measurements: 12” long x 12” wide x 12” tall.

Entries must be submitted between February 22, 2011 and April 25, 2011 (extended!). Judges will announce the winners a week after the extended deadline, on May 2, 2011. The Anomaly Detectors will be featured at the Gaslight Gathering event May 6-8, 2011, at the Town and Country Hotel in San Diego. Please note that Gaslight Gathering passes are required to enter the convention and view the winners, but that passes are not required to enter the contest.

How to Enter

Drop off or carefully mail your Detector to the San Diego Hall of Champions Sports Museum, 2131 Pan American Plaza, San Diego, CA 92101, ATTN: Giskin Anomaly, BPOC. Include your full name, address, phone number, and email address. Deadline for entries is April 25, 2011 at 4pm.

Entries will be judged by a committee from the Gaslight Gathering and the Balboa Park Online Collaborative. All decisions of the Judges are final and binding. Entries will be displayed at the Gaslight Gathering event at the Town and Country Hotel from May 6-8, 2011. Entries will not be returned unless picked up at BPOC’s office, 2131 Pan American Plaza, between May 9 and May 11, 2011.

The Contest is open to individuals, 18 years or older at the time of entry, who are legal residents of the United States only. One entry per person.

  • Entries that are lost, late, misdirected or illegible, unintelligible, incomplete, for any reason, will not be eligible.
  • The Balboa Park Online Collaborative (the “Sponsor”) and the Gaslight Gathering Organizing Committee (the “Organizers”) are not responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen entries.
  • The Contest is not open to employees, agents, or representatives of the Sponsor and Organizers, or any of their parents, subsidiaries, sister companies or affiliates, or any member of their immediate family. Immediate family includes only spouses, parents, and children. Day-of Event Volunteers for the Gaslight Gathering are eligible.
  • Sponsor and Organizers are not responsible for computer system, hardware, software, or program malfunctions or other errors, failures, or delayed computer transactions or network connections that are human or technical in nature. Furthermore, Sponsor and Organizers are not responsible for: (i) lost, misdirected, misplaced, illegible, unintelligible, incomplete, or late entries or (ii) any act, failure to act, or delay regarding the transmitting or processing of entries.
  • By entering, you represent that your entry is your own original creation, it has not been copied from others, and that it does not violate the rights of any other person or entity. Any intellectual property infringement, misuse or plagiarism of another person’s work in any form or state will result in immediate disqualification and forfeiture of eligibility to receive all awards, recognition and prizes.
  • By submitting your entry to the contest, you give Balboa Park Online Collaborative and its partners an irrevocable perpetual royalty-free right (with or without attribution to you) to use, reproduce, modify, publish, distribute, and otherwise exercise all copyright and publicity with respect to images of those entries, for the use in publicity materials related to the contest and the Giskin Anomaly and for use in grant proposals, conference papers, and other communications materials related to the contest and Giskin Anomaly, without any further compensation to you. All other copyright and publicity rights shall be retained by the artist(s). Entries will not be returned unless picked up at BPOC’s office, 2131 Pan American Plaza, San Diego, CA, between May 9 and May 11, 2011.
  • Uses by the Balboa Park Online Collaborative of images of their submissions shall include attribution of the artists wherever possible, with exceptions to include, but not be limited to, instances like group photographs where individual attribution may not be possible.
  • By entering the Contest and/or accepting a prize, to the maximum extent permitted by law, you agree to release and agree to hold harmless Sponsor and Organizers and their prize sponsors, judges, officers, employees, representatives, agents and any party associated with the development of the Contest from any and all liability for any injuries, losses, damages, legal claims, costs, demand or action of any kind, including death, arising in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from acceptance, possession, use or misuse of a prize or participation in this contest. To the maximum extent permitted by law, you agree to indemnify Balboa Park Online Collaborative against any liability, claims, demands, losses, damages, costs and expenses resulting from any act, default or omission by you and/or a breach of warranty by you, or any breach, non-observance or omission of these rules by you, whether negligent or otherwise.
  • To the extent permitted by law, the rights to litigate, to seek injunctive relief or to any other recourse to judicial or any other procedure in case of disputes or claims resulting from or in connection with this Contest, are hereby excluded, and you expressly waive any and all such rights.
  • Sponsor, in its sole discretion, reserves the right to disqualify any person tampering with the submission or voting process.
  • Sponsor reserves the right to cancel, terminate or modify the Contest if it is not capable of completion as planned due to, for example, infection by a computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention or technical failures of any sort. In no event will Sponsor and Organizers are be responsible for any damages or losses arising out of access to and use of the websites or the downloading from and/or printing material downloaded from said site. Sponsor and Organizers are not responsible for lost, late, incomplete or misdirected entries.
  • There shall be no substitutions for the Prizes offered except at the discretion of Sponsors, in which case a prize of equal or greater value will be substituted.
  • If any provision(s) of these Contest Rules are held to be invalid or unenforceable, all remaining provisions hereof will remain in full force and effect.
  • Balboa Park Online Collaborative is entitled to interpret these rules as needed and its decisions are final.
