California Native Plant Garden

This demonstration garden, recently expanded to five acres, is located at on the west side of the Balboa Park Tennis Club (2201 Morley Field Drive) tennis courts at Morley Field on Balboa Park's East Mesa and is just south of the Upas and Alabama Street intersections.  It is adjacent to the 150 acre Florida Canyon Nature Preserve. An interpretive brochure is provided with information on and identification of 36 of over 100 plants on display, which are drought tolerant California native plants suitable for home and landscape use. A quarter mile long footpath loops around the original part of the garden for an easy stroll (there are ten steps up and down on the north and south ends of the garden), showing the wonderful flowers and the foliage of some of San Diego's 2,600 types of native plants. Parking is immediately adjacent to the California Native Plant Garden, and restrooms are conveniently located about 300 feet to the east, at the south end of the tennis courts.

There is a work party on the second Saturday of the month, open to the public, from 9:00 a.m. to12:00 noon.
