(SAN DIEGO, CA) October 19, 2016 — Balboa Park December Nights, the nation’s premier holiday festival, will take place on Friday, December 2 from 3-11pm and Saturday, December, 3 from noon-11pm. Adults and children alike are invited to come together for festive fun, food and several new attractions available this year throughout the park.
The annual event will now offer an exclusive VIP Lounge with special activities, an Artisan Marketplace to find local and unique handcrafted items, as well as the opportunity to take home a cherished keepsake just in time for the holidays.
As you stroll through the spectacular holiday lighting throughout the Park be sure to check out what’s new this year at December Nights including:
● Artisan Marketplace: Located on the Northeast corner of Plaza de Panama, the Artisan Marketplace will offer a shopping opportunity celebrating the talents and skills of the local makers featuring one-of-a-kind gifts, handmade items and locally made crafts.
● A Keepsake to Remember: The Fab Trailers Photo Booth….set inside a whimsically decorated vintage trailer backdrop of a gleeful Southern California winter holiday, located on the East Side of the Plaza de Panama fountain, for a festive photo to capture the memory with friends or loved ones of your December Night experience. A professional photographer provides on-site printing for a one-of-a-kind memento that is sure to bring a smile to everyone’s face.
● Fun For All To See & Hear: The event features an incredible line up of entertainment and performances. Don’t miss the SWEA (San Diego Quadrangle) brings Swedish culture with the Santa Lucia procession, the San Diego Civic Dance Arts with a Rockette-style number, located on interior patio of the Casa del Prado, the San Diego Civic Youth with ballet excerpts from the Nutcracker (Casa del Prado Theater) and the San Diego Chorus of Sweet Adelines, an a cappella singing barbershop style.
- Photography of Gordon Parks : The Veterans Museum at Balboa Park in partnership with the San Diego African American Museum of Fine Art invites you to enjoy the photographic genius of Gordon Parks. The exhibit will pay special tribute to African American troops and the sacrifices made abroad during the Vietnam War. Free; 5pm -9pm, December 2 and 3.

Dec. 3, 2012, San Diego—Balboa Park December Nights,San Diego’s favorite kick-off to the holiday season, will take place for the 35th year on Friday, December 7 and Saturday, December 8, 2012. The beloved holiday event, co-produced by the City of San Diego and the San Diego Hall of Champions, features sparkling lights; multi-cultural music and dance performances; carolers, bell-ringers, choirs and bands; and food throughout the Park. In the spirit of the holidays, participating Balboa Park museums open their doors free of charge from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. both evenings.
During December Nights, Balboa Park is transformed into a holiday wonderland with historic Park promenades, plantings and structures adorned with seasonal decorations and lights. More than 300,000 attendees are expected, making this the largest free community festival in San Diego. Balboa Park December Nights highlights include:
See the annual production of Del Cerro Baptist Church Christmas Story Tree, the House of Scotland Pipers , the Sun Harbor Chorus and many more on the Organ Pavilion Stage; community musicians and dance troupes at the Botanical Building Stage and the Palisades Stage; good time Cajun-Zydeco sounds on the Bon Temps Dance Pavilion; music and dance at Junior Theatre Stage, San Diego Civic Dance Stage, and also Civic Youth Ballet showcases excerpts from The Nutcracker on the Casa del Prado Stage; music and dance from around the world at the International Cottages Stage; plus a host of musical performances inside many Park museums.
Food!International Cottages’ Christmas Festival features food from around the world including: empanadas, egg rolls, fried plantains, pierogi, baklava, paella and pie; many other food options throughout the Park, including the Prado Pub on the Square in the Plaza de Panama.

San Diego Gas & Electric®, a Sempra Energy utility, covers the center of the Plaza de Panama with a dazzling and energy-efficient canopy of LED holiday lights that will illuminate the Park for the entire holiday season. SDG&E, in partnership with TechniArt, will be hosting a Lighting and Energy Fair at the SDG&E booth during December Nights. The Lighting and Energy Fair is a collaborative effort to increase customers’ awareness, knowledge and attitude towards Energy Efficiency by offering discounted lighting products (e.g. Energy-saving starter kits) and information. The SDG&E energy efficiency team will be on-site to introduce other EE/DR programs on-the-spot as well.
TechniArt is a privately held company established in the State of Connecticut in 1986. TechniArt specializes in promoting and selling energy efficient lighting technologies through their mobile operations. This approach allows TechniArt to not only sell the products, but also educate customers about the latest EE technologies.

Balboa Park December Nights is the largest free community event in San Diego, attracting more than 300,000 visitors annually. The two-day festival, Balboa Park’s holiday gift to San Diego, features free admission to museums and cultural attractions (from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. both evenings), international foods, multi-cultural music and dance performances, Christmas carolers, bell-ringers, choirs and bands, along with a variety of holiday-themed areas. The largest free community festival in San Diego, December Nights will bring more than 300,000 visitors to the park to revel and enjoy the season over two days.
Entertainment for the whole family, delicious cuisine and holiday cheer are all part of this classic and elaborate long-standing San Diego celebration. Time-carved traditions—including food from around the globe at the International Christmas Festival at the House of Pacific Relations Cottages; unique gift shopping at the museum stores and with the artisans of Spanish Village; and musical and dance presentations from the San Diego Junior Theatre, San Diego Civic Youth Ballet, Del Cerro Baptist’s Christmas Story Tree and more—fill the heart of Balboa Park. In addition, museums will feature a wide variety of exhibitions and entertainment, including the Timken Museum’s annual Christmas Tree displaying the exquisite Schlappi Collection of Hord and Schlappi Christmas ornaments; the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center’s kid-friendly and interactive Grossology: The Impolite Science of the Human Body and the San Diego Natural History Museum’s Fossil Mysteries set to holiday music in the atrium.
