Balboa Park December Nights,San Diego’s favorite kick-off to the holiday season, will take place for the 36th year on Friday, December 6 and Saturday, December 7, 2013. The beloved holiday event, co-produced by the City of San Diego and the Balboa Park Conservancy, features sparkling lights; multi-cultural music and dance performances; carolers, bell-ringers, choirs and bands; and food throughout the Park. In the spirit of the holidays, participating Balboa Park museums open their doors free of charge from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. both evenings.

 

During December Nights, Balboa Park is transformed into a holiday wonderland with historic Park promenades, plantings and structures adorned with seasonal decorations and lights.  More than 350,000 attendees are expected, making this the largest free community festival in San Diego. Balboa Park December Nights highlights include:  

 

·       Stages galore! See the annual production of Del Cerro Baptist Church Christmas Story Tree, the House of Scotland Pipers , the Sun Harbor Chorus  and many more on the Organ Pavilion Stage; community musicians and dance troupes at the Botanical Building Stage and the Palisades Stage; good time Cajun-Zydeco sounds on the Bon Temps Dance Pavilion; music and dance at Junior Theatre Stage, San Diego Civic Dance Stage, and also Civic Youth Ballet showcases excerpts from The Nutcracker on the Casa del Prado Stage; music and dance from around the world at the International Cottages Stage; plus a host of musical performances inside many Park museums.

·       Food! International Cottages’ Christmas Festival features food from around the world including: empanadas, egg rolls, fried plantains, pierogi, baklava, paella and pie; many other food options throughout the Park, including the Prado Pub on the Square in the Plaza de Panama.

·       32nd year of the annual Santa Lucia Procession at the California Quadrangle near the Museum of Man.

·       Enhanced lighting throughout the Park, including a magnificent lightshow on Botanical Building and the Lily Pond and the lighting of the Moreton Bay Fig Tree.

·       Opportunities for distinct holiday photos throughout the Park including pictures with Santa and The Grinch

 

New this year: Extended hours! Due to popular demand, December Nights opens even earlier this year–3:00 p.m. on Friday and 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, and will remain in operation until 11:00 p.m. both nights, allowing visitors even more time to enjoy the music, food, and fun. (Free museum hours will remain 5:00–9:00 p.m. both nights.)

 

San Diego Gas & Electric®, a Sempra Energy utility, covers the center of the Plaza de Panama with a dazzling and energy-efficient canopy of LED holiday lights that will illuminate the Park for the entire holiday season.

 

Parking-Visitors to December Nights can help keep Balboa Park “green” by taking the free shuttles. Free shuttle locations include:

·       PETCO Park and lots around Park Blvd. and Imperial Ave Parking is $5.00/vehicle and there are more than 2,000 parking spaces in this area. Shuttle drops off at 6th and Laurel Streets

·       City College Lots between 16th and "B" Street. Parking is free. Shuttle drops off at 6th and Laurel.

·       Free disabled parking at the Fleet Science Center lot and the Federal lot near the Hall of Champions.

·       Shuttle service runs from 3:00- midnight on Friday and 11:30 a.m.-midnight on Saturday.

·       The last shuttle leaves all sites at 8:00pm for the Park. Plan to arrive at locations before 7:00pm.

In addition, there will be optional preferred parking for $20/vehicle at the Natural History Museum parking lot and the South Carousel lot (both accessible from Park Blvd. and Village Place). Paid parking will also be available at the Inspiration Point parking lot for $20/vehicle (accessible from Park Blvd and Presidents Way). There is limited free parking at the San Diego Zoo lot.

SDG&E, in partnership with TechniArt, will be hosting a Lighting and Energy Fair at the SDG&E booth during December Nights. The Lighting and Energy Fair is a collaborative effort to increase customers’ awareness, knowledge and attitude towards Energy Efficiency by offering discounted lighting products (e.g. Energy-saving starter kits) and information. The SDG&E energy efficiency team will be on-site to introduce other EE/DR programs on-the-spot as well.

TechniArt is a privately held company established in the State of Connecticut in 1986. TechniArt specializes in promoting and selling energy efficient lighting technologies through their mobile operations. This approach allows TechniArt to not only sell the products, but also educate customers about the latest EE technologies.

Alpha Project Mission Statement

Alpha Project empowers individuals, families, and communities by providing work, recovery and support services to people who are motivated to change their lives and achieve self-sufficiency.  Alpha Project is committed to breaking the cycle of poverty by providing opportunities to men, women and families, as well as at-risk children and youth facing barriers to independence. Balboa Park December Nights is the largest free community event in San Diego, attracting more than 300,000 visitors annually. The two-day festival, Balboa Park’s holiday gift to San Diego, features free admission to museums and cultural attractions (from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. both evenings), international foods, multi-cultural music and dance performances, Christmas carolers, bell-ringers, choirs and bands, along with a variety of holiday-themed areas. San Diego’s Favorite Holiday Extravaganza Celebrates 35 Amazing Years

 

SAN DIEGO—Balboa Park December Nights, San Diego’s favorite kick-off to the holiday season, will celebrate 35 years of bringing friends, families and the community together on Friday, December 7, from 5-10 p.m. and Saturday, December 8, Noon-10 p.m. In the spirit of the holidays, participating Balboa Park museums open their doors free of charge from 5 to 9 p.m. both evenings. The largest free community festival in San Diego, December Nights will bring more than 300,000 visitors to the park to revel and enjoy the season over two days.

Entertainment for the whole family, delicious cuisine and holiday cheer are all part of this classic and elaborate long-standing San Diego celebration. Time-carved traditions—including food from around the globe at the International Christmas Festival at the House of Pacific Relations Cottages; unique gift shopping at the museum stores and with the artisans of Spanish Village; and musical and dance presentations from the San Diego Junior Theatre, San Diego Civic Youth Ballet, Del Cerro Baptist’s Christmas Story Tree and more—fill the heart of Balboa Park. In addition, museums will feature a wide variety of exhibitions and entertainment, including the Timken Museum’s annual Christmas Tree displaying the exquisite Schlappi Collection of Hord and Schlappi Christmas ornaments; the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center’s kid-friendly and interactive Grossology: The Impolite Science of the Human Body and the San Diego Natural History Museum’s Fossil Mysteries set to holiday music in the atrium.
