Separating science fiction from science fact, The Science of … Aliens provides the most comprehensive exploration of the possibility of life on other planets ever assembled in a spectacular, multimedia format.
As the opening section’s name implies, Alien Fiction explains earthlings’ fascination with alien creatures throughout history with scores of colorful examples from art, literature, film, and popular culture. While UFO conspiracy theorists may have different ideas, there is no denying that humans have always projected their deepest fears of the unknown on scary creatures like ghosts, demons, and now aliens, especially in times of social and political instability.
Catching visitors up on the latest discoveries, Alien Science reveals that very alien-like creatures already inhabit our planet in some of the most extreme environments, pointing to the real possibility of life elsewhere in equally, if not more, inhospitable settings. Interactive displays further show visitors how scientists are currently probing deep into our own solar system and beyond to find traces of life or the building blocks that would support it.
All this science fact forms the basis of scientific theory in the exhibition’s centerpiece, Alien Worlds. Here visitors interact with elaborate computerized touch-sensitive platforms that recreate two hypothetical alien worlds: Aurelia and Blue Moon. How various creatures and plants in each world would possibly look, feed, reproduce, and thrive is laid out in great detail through engaging computer graphics and animation.
Concluding the exhibition, Alien Communication shows what scientists are doing to communicate with alien intelligence and lets visitors “phone home” by composing their own message to an alien.
