The First Wives Club - A New Musical EXTENDED until August 30th!
Jul 17, 09 thru Aug 30, 09
Featuring a cast and crew of Broadway veterans, Tony Award winners, and Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, the Old Globe presents the world premiere of the Broadway-bound musical comedy, The First Wives Club, based on the best-selling book and hit 1996 movie.
Like the film, the theatrical version centers on three former, now middle-aged, college friends who band together to exact revenge on their husbands for leaving them for younger women. The three principals are played by acclaimed veteran of film, television, and Broadway, Sheryl Lee Ralph (“Elyse”); noted Broadway and TV actress, Barbara Walsh (“Brenda”); and Tony Award winner Karen Ziemba (“Annie”), who made her Globe debut last January starring in Six Degrees of Separation.
Perhaps even more noteworthy than the stellar cast is the team that penned the music and lyrics for the Globe’s production: the prolific Motown songwriters and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Eddie Holland. Reunited especially for The First Wives Club, Holland-Dozier-Holland are responsible for such soul classics as “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You),” “Baby I Need Your Loving,” “Stop! In the Name of Love,” and “I Can’t Help Myself,” and their work has been recorded by Rod Stewart, Michael Jackson, The Carpenters, Barbara Streisand, The Temptations, and the Beatles, to name a few. Could there be another hit in the making?
